Internet Video & Streaming

Internet video emergence has been underway for several years. Impediments delayed widespread deployment and acceptance…until now.

Internet video can be a cost-effective communication tool for practically any size business.

Better techniques, faster network connections, combined with improved server and media-player software can deliver quality and reliable Internet video experiences to users.

New forecasts indicate that business use of Internet video will undergo significant growth through 2007.

Adoption of Internet video by companies should accelerate rapidly, with usage becoming widespread – perhaps as ubiquitous as Web sites themselves.

Planning and Implementing Internet and Web site video – sooner rather than later – could be prudent for many firms.

Most IP networks are capable of delivering multiple video streams without slowing data traffic. Switches and routers typically use 10/100 Mbps ports that provide network users with their own 100Mbps connection.

On-demand Internet video can be delivered to users from Web servers, streamed from remote network servers or from Web hosting companies.

  • Delivering a 5 Mbps DVD quality video stream using an internal enterprise network, results in 95 Mbps of bandwidth still available for other data traffic.

  • Streams delivering video at 600 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps can provide good video quality to Internet users through typical broadband connections.

  • Multicasting is used to stream live events to hundreds or thousands of viewers. It can conserve bandwidth because a single stream is sent from the video source. Then, IP network switches replicate the stream as required. Each viewer receives a separate stream from the local switch.

  • A dual-stream encoder used for multicasting can create two separate streams: one for high-quality internal networks and a second lower-bandwidth stream for remote Internet access.

Companies are using Internet video for a variety
of applications.

Some of these include:

  • Training

  • Product Introductions

  • Event Broadcasts (narrowcasts)

  • Video Conferences

  • News Distribution

Many companies look only at costs associated with using Internet video... some never analyze how much can actually be saved.

Savings can come from several areas:

  • Travel expense related to bringing multiple employees to a central location requiring: airline tickets, lodging, car rental and meals.

  • Time-to-market can be important for new product introductions. Distributing information faster allows companies to launch products quickly and obtain a leap on competitors.

  • Employee morale can be enhanced by delivering communications that improve happiness and increase productivity.

  • Timely customer information can be accomplished quickly with improved and effective messages.
